Rapid Prototyping is a method for rapid preparation of sample components based on design data.
Rapid prototyping methods are therefore production methods that have the goal of existing CAD data as possible without manual detours or forms directly and rapidly into pieces. The relevant procedures for this group data interface is the STL format.
The current technology allowed a layer thicknesses of up to 16µm and a tolerance of 0.025 mm of the component dimension.
